What is Bioinformatics Week?
Instructors from the National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI) and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) will provide the majority of the lectures/workshops. Topics were chosen primarily to provide a broad foundation for enhancing bioinformatics knowledge and practice to the widest possible audience at Stanford University. NCBI courses will focus primarily on nucleic acids, while EBI courses will concentrate on protein and software programming topics. Additional courses include lectures from researchers at the UCSC Genome Group, the Stanford Microarray Database group and Lane Medical Library.

Who should attend?
Bioinformatics Week is open to all Stanford University faculty, staff and graduate students, regardless of professional discipline or level of involvement in research and/or education.

How do I attend?
Although all Bioinformatics Week instructional sessions are free for university researchers, you must register for each session you want to attend and wear your Bioinformatics Week name badge to be admitted to each course.

Researchers at local biotech companies can attend by registering through Stanford Event Services. There is a cost of $295 for the entire week of lectures. $495 to include both lectures and hands-on workshops.

Before you register, familiarize yourself with the various courses and their content. Download and print the provided PDF documents if desired. When you click on the registration link provided, you will be taken to a different web site to register which does not contain course descriptions.

You will receive a confirmation of your registration, and a week before Bioinformatics Week, you will receive additional information by e-mail.

Because space & computer workstations are limited, you may not get into every session.

How do I register?
Use the left hand navigational bar on this website to:

1. Learn what sessions are offered and when (Event Schedule)
   
2. Read about the topics covered and prerequisites needed (Course Descriptions)
   
3. Learn about the instructors (Presenters' biographies)
   
4. Choose between lectures and workshops as necessary (see below).
   
5. Click on the registration link and follow the instructions at the next web page to choose the method of regisration (Stanford, Other University, Corporate). You will be routed to the correct registration form where you can locate the date and title of courses of interest and select them for registration.
   
6. Your registration will be confirmed and a name badge created for you.
   
7. Pick up your name badge at the registration table during Bioinformatics Week.
   
8. Your name badge will admit you to your registered sessions.
   
9. For workshops, you will also have to show your Stanford photo ID.

How do I choose between lectures and workshops on the same topic?
While both NCBI and EBI are offering lectures and workshops, they have structured their offerings differently:

• EBI is offering lectures and/or workshops Monday and Tuesday. Both have the same content. The difference is that a workshop provides you with hands-on experience in working through the problems and examples presented during the lecture. Although for any given topic you may register for the lecture, the workshop, or both, workshop space is limited and priority will be given to those registering only for workshops if necessary. For lectures, there will be a lot of space in Fairchild Auditorium, and you can bring your laptop and follow along.
  
• NCBI will provide lectures and optional hands-on computer workshops Wednesday through Friday. The content can differ between the lectures and the workshops. You may register for the lecture only or for BOTH the lecture and the workshop.
  
• Register early for workshops, as space is limited due to a combination of seat availability and number of instructors. Your name will be added to a waiting list if necessary.
  
• We invite everyone to bring their wireless-connectable laptop computers to any of the lectures to follow along with the instructors as conditions permit. Unfortunately, researchers from outside of Stanford will not be able to connect to the Stanford network.
